It is with great sadness that Student Sponsor Partners mourns the passing of founder Peter M. Flanigan.
SSP executive director Margaret Minson said, “Since Peter founded Student Sponsor Partners 27 years ago, nearly 6,000 students have graduated from high school – 200 of them just received their diplomas last month. SSP is a living example of his legacy and the many lives that he transformed.”
In 1986 Peter founded Student Sponsor Partners as an alternative for disadvantaged students most at risk of dropping out of high school. He recruited friends and colleagues to financially sponsor and mentor 45 original students attending two schools.
This fall, SSP will welcome its 28th class into the ninth grade, and currently serves over 1,400 students at 25 partner schools throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. More than 80% of SSP students earn high school diplomas, and over 90% of graduates are accepted to college.
